    Film Categories:

Each film category represents how it was curated (i.e the competition that the films were submitted to).  To help you make your film selections, we color code them in our program guide and online. Here are brief descriptions for each of the main categories:

Special Presentations:  High profile films featuring notable names and rising stars making their Nashville premieres.

Spectrum:  Compelling, challenging stories crafted by the filmmakers who are setting trends in contemporary world cinema.

Tennessee First Competition:  Original material born throughout the Volunteer State.

Narrative Competition:  The newest films from around the world created by established filmmakers.

New Directors Competition: Narrative works created by first-time filmmakers.

Documentary Competition:  A selection of the finest non-fiction cinema from around the world.

Music Films/Music City Competition:  Highlighting films that celebrate music, musicians and the impact music has on our lives.

Animated Feature Competition:  Independent animated visions created in all styles and coming from all around the world.

Graveyard Shift Competition:  An unflinching look at the human (and inhuman) condition, holding nothing back and digging down to the marrow.  Not for the faint of heart.

Shorts Programs:  Short films are all under 40 minutes.  The winning films in the Narrative Shorts Competition, Animated Shorts Competition, and Documentary Shorts Competition will become eligible for Academy Award Consideration, provided it meets all other eligibility requirements.
