Part of Shocktober
On a sleepy island off the coast of Massachusetts, sisters Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian (Nicole Kidman) just want to live an ordinary life — but there’s one little problem. They’re witches. Gillian is fun and flirty while Sally occupies a more modest demeanor, but the one thing the sisters have in common is a curse — any man they fall in love with is doomed. When Gillian’s life is threatened, the sisters must turn to familiar forces to help unlock the resplendent powers lying dormant inside of them.
PRACTICAL MAGIC celebrates feminist themes often overlooked in Hollywood in its time — sisterhood, unapologetic sexual autonomy, resilience, empowering nurture, and the sacred safe spaces where women can just…be.
“PRACTICAL MAGIC is the THELMA AND LOUISE of witch movies.” —Caroline Framke, Vox
“It's Barbie Joins a Coven time as Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman shake their long flossy hair and play witch sisters with otherworldly decorative qualities… Its leading actresses are capable of real enchantment, enough to outshine the prefabricated kind.” —Janet Maslin, New York Times (Oct 16, 1998)
