THE BLOB (1988)

    Part of Midnight Movies

The late, great Chuck Russell (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3, THE MASK) took a beloved ’50s creature feature and reinvented it for the ’80s, crafting the last triumphant stand for the pre-computer golden age of practical effects.

A shapeless organism has come to earth with the parallel urges to consume and expand, spreading muculent mayhem and wrecking the status quo of small-town America. Who will save us from the living incarnation of consumption? How can an enemy with no means of speech or capacity for reason be dealt with?

Like THE THING, like THE FLT, THE BLOB is one of the ultimate tier of horror remakes, absorbing and exceeding its predecessor and laying waste to all which would come after it. The perfect intersection between the ’50s nostalgia of Reagan-era conformity and the literary Splatterpunk movement (at times feeling like a gonzo tear through Skipp and Spector’s The Bridge), THE BLOB is an imaginative assault on bodily autonomy and a fitting testament to Russell’s memory.
