THE OTHERS

Part of A Celebration of Nicole Kidman

In 1945, Grace Stewart (Nicole Kidman) and her two children live an unusually isolated existence behind the locked doors and drawn curtains of a secluded mansion on one of the Channel Islands. The arrival of mysterious new servants (Fionnula Flanagan, Ed Sykes) and her apparently war-fatigued husband Charles (Christopher Eccleston) raise the unworldly feeling that there is far more to this house than can be seen — provoking Grace into a terrifying fight to save her children and preserve her sanity. Written, directed and scored by filmmaker Alejandro Amenábar whose languorous command of the syntax of dread lords heavily, THE OTHERS features Ms. Kidman as its pitch-perfect medium, imbuing this supernatural horror film with laser-focused intensity.

Restoration Credit: The original 35mm negative was scanned in 4K on Blackmagic Cintel and the color grading was made with DaVinci Resolve Studio. The restoration was supervised by the film’s director.

“The show belongs to Kidman…. We’re never quite certain whether to fear her, or fear for her. Like great silver-screen stars of yore, Kidman does more than act here: She fascinates, holding camera and viewers spellbound.” —Dennis Harvey, Variety (Aug 6, 2001)

“Shrewdly cast, Kidman is pitch perfect. It's a clammy, ingenious film, one of the best studio movies of the year.” —Time Out (Oct 30, 2018)

“The small but strong cast display just the right level of creepiness, and the two child stars are a real find…. Ultimately though, it's Kidman who takes centre stage…as the mother driven to distraction, consumed by over-protective love for her children, yet at the same time unable to comprehend the downfall of her safe haven.” —Caroline Westbrook, Empire Magazine (Jan 1, 2000)

“You can't take your eyes off Ms. Kidman; she has never played a role with more focused energy.” —Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal
